More Time, Same Requirements. ADA Title II Deadlines Extended.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has extended the compliance deadlines for digital accessibility under ADA Title II, giving state and local governments additional time to ensure their digital content meets accessibility standards.

New ADA Title II Deadlines

  • April 26, 2027, for entities serving populations of 50,000 or more
  • April 26, 2028, for entities serving populations under 50,000 and special districts

While the timeline has shifted, the expectations remain the same. These requirements apply to websites, mobile apps, and other digital services provided by public entities, including those delivered through third-party vendors. The rule aligns with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), which provides the standard for meeting accessibility requirements.

While limited exceptions exist, such as certain archived content or pre-existing documents, the majority of active digital content must meet accessibility requirements.

While the DOJ’s extension provides more time, it doesn’t change the responsibility of organizations. Digital accessibility is no longer optional; it is an active compliance requirement and a critical component of delivering a positive user experience.

Organizations should use this extended timeline strategically to:

  • Audit current digital content

  • Implement WCAG-aligned improvements
  • Establish sustainable accessibility practices

Delaying action can increase both legal risk and remediation costs over time, while taking proactive steps now can make the path to compliance more manageable.
